ViaDoom – a Perfect Day to Undrive!

Today’s the first day of ViaDoom – our infamous Alaska Way Viaduct will be shut down for 9 days for the first phase of its demolition.  The doomed segment was open this morning as a public walkway, so my daughter and I rode down on our bikes in the drizzle to join the celebration.

The machine that bores the controversial tunnel replacement will start its work directly below the spot where I’m helping hold this sign.

It’s called ViaDoom not because the Viaduct is doomed – but because Seattle drivers fear that THEY are doomed to endless hours stuck in traffic with the Viaduct closed.  The obvious solution: UNDRIVE!  And to help more people Undrive, now’s the time to donate to the Undrive-a-Thon Fundraiser!
