Hello world! As a member that is new of web log team, we am so excited to share numerous of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. They frequently inquire like ‘what do you do on a daily basis?’ or ‘do you have to work in the summertime? once I talk to my friends and family about my job,’ i am hoping that through my monthly additions to this weblog, you’ll get an improved notion of what we do each and every day as admission counselors.

So allow’s begin with the present. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That might sound early with a, reasonable to others, but we can inform you, this at 7:45 have always been, I was tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. morning) You see, my flight from Los Angeles was likely to reach Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (to be exact.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you maybe not,) my flight was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school check out today always has coffee waiting for me, and I was particularly appreciative today (Thanks Sheila!) I visit, at this school it’s a different format which consists mostly of me answering questions although I usually give about a 30 minute presentation to students when. Thankfully the students came prepared. They asked great questions and I also think we only stuttered a few times.

I’d some time to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. I stopped for a few breakfast and a coffee refill. In a perfect world i arrive about 10 mins prior to a trip, but frequently i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Thankfully, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I consumed my bagel and drank my latte. Today I became also able to talk with some counselors that will be constantly a highlight of my time. University counselors are often full of details about students, their schools, and usually life as a whole. Additionally reminds me of my high school times where We invested lot of the time on my counselor’s couch.

Exactly How numerous coffee cups can you find in this image?

My third visit today had been to a school i have never checked out before. There were about eight students present and one ended up being even using a USC t-shirt. This pupil, let us call him Brandon, told me about his recent visit to campus so we’d a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I enjoy sharing common USC experiences with students, especially when i am overseas.

Finally, between my third and fourth check out this early morning, I happened to be in a position to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the next senior high school. Upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer, a good reminder of the relationships we continue to construct at each college.

After my fifth and visit that is final, we returned to my hotel, debriefed my day by means of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch up on some work. My instinct that is first is to test my email. Oh look! I got an email from Brandon thanking me for my visit and asking a question about something I mentioned. Love when that takes place!

I am hoping to meet many of you as I continue my travels! If there’s anything else you want to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel absolve to leave concerns into the remark section and I will do my better to return to you quickly!

Fight On!

Mythbuster: we have to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice

The Myth: Attending university fairs, visits and tours will increase my chances of admission.

The Verdict: Not at USC.

Every late August/early September, there are 5 or so emails in my inbox each and every morning utilizing the subject ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have the same general format. ‘Hello Jessica- simply wished to tell you that I go to ABC senior school, we play baseball and I also can not wait to utilize to USC. I have always wanted to be a learning student in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but what am I supposed to express? Good fortune along with your baseball period? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me personally how their first semester went, they got the lead role in the springtime musical, and that USC remains their first option. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.

At USC, we usually do not monitor students’s interest outside associated with the actual application for admission choice purposes. Attending our programs is a way that is wonderful discover more about USC, but planning to an event or sending email messages like those we described will not increase your chances of admission to the college.

As admission counselors, it is true that individuals are your main contact while you have the admission process at USC so we are happy to help you with any help you might need. However, students only benefit from reaching out to us whether they have specific questions- especially questions to which they can not find the clear answer on line. I do believe pupils often confuse this role and make the assumption us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission that they HAVE to email.

So how will you show us which you’re interested in USC? in place of spending your time emailing us with updates, it is in your very best interest to make use shmoop pro of that time to get results on your a reaction to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and how you plan to pursue them at USC.’ You should discuss specific resources and possibilities you would like to take advantage of at USC. in the place of emailing us your list of tasks, fill down the game Summary completely. A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out more than an introduction e-mail or an invite to coffee.

Consider that some educational schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach away to them, while others may expect students in the geographic area to go to campus. The thought of demonstrated interest differs, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.

By the end of the day, we do wish to see that you’re seriously considering being a student here that you are interested in USC and. The way that is best for you yourself to articulate this interest is through your application.
